Meet Stephen

At SPI Pharma, expertise isn't built overnight, it's earned through years of hands-on problem-solving, deep collaboration, and genuine commitment to customer success. In this installment of our Meet the Experts series, we sat down with Stephen Weide, Senior Analytical Scientist at SPI Pharma, to talk about his journey, his role, and what drives his passion for the science and the people behind it.

Nearly 15 Years of Growing with SPI

Stephen joined SPI Pharma in 2011 and by his own account, it happened fast. A Michigan native from the east side of the state, he was drawn to SPI's culture and the camaraderie of the team from day one. What started as a quick hire turned into nearly a decade and a half of growth, contribution, and shared purpose. As he put it, he and many of his colleagues have essentially grown up together at SPI — and that shared history is part of what makes the team so effective.

A Role at the Intersection of Science and Partnership

As a Senior Analytical Scientist, Stephen's work sits at a critical crossroads within SPI. His primary responsibility is analytical testing for SPI's product portfolio, but what makes his role distinctive is how deeply it connects across the organization. With background experience in both R&D and QA, Stephen serves as a bridge between the formulation lab and the plant floor, helping translate scientific results into real-world manufacturing outcomes.

Beyond internal testing, Stephen's team also engages directly with customers and Technical Development Managers (TDMs) — helping to open conversations, identify needs, and connect partners with the right SPI solutions. His goal isn't simply to recommend a product off the shelf, but to understand what outcome the customer is truly trying to achieve and then identify how SPI's portfolio can get them there even if the path looks a little different from what they originally expected.

Project Highlights: Delivering Results that Matter

When asked about standout projects, Stephen pointed to two that reflect SPI's commitment to rigorous science and meaningful customer impact.

The first was the Compressol™ ProTab product development initiative — an internal project that required navigating significant technical complexity, including formulation headaches and iterative back-and-forth testing. After roughly 15 months of dedicated work, the team brought it across the finish line. It was, in Stephen's words, a big success.

The second was a customer-sponsored project where a client reached out with a formulation challenge that took nearly two years to resolve. The process was arduous demanding persistence, collaboration, and creativity, but the result delivered real value for both the customer and SPI. These are the kinds of wins that validate the team's dedication and reinforce why doing the work right matters.

Thinking About Where the Market Is Going

One of the things that distinguishes Stephen's perspective is his habit of looking beyond the lab to where the consumer market is heading and how SPI's drug delivery systems (DDS) can meet those trends. He described walking the supplement and OTC aisle at the store and thinking critically about formats: stick packs, gummies, alternative dosage forms, and beyond.

Stephen sees real opportunity in the growing consumer demand for choice in how people take their medicine. Historically dominated by tablets and capsules, the market has seen relatively little innovation in dosage form — and SPI's DDS platforms are well-positioned to change that. He is actively working to push SPI's products into emerging formats where the fit makes sense, helping partners offer consumers more ways to stay adherent to their regimens.

I’m trying to push that industry forward and then show what our products can do. Our products fit so well into these emerging marketing. I want to go to the store one day and see that SPI is in there.
